1月定例セミナー「今年の10大注目点」でも、お話ししたが、今年は、「ディスインフレ」の動向から目が離せない。おそらく、これが年間を通して続くのではないか。
パンデミック以降、急速に上昇した物価は、特にモノの値段が上昇することにより、目に見えて上昇し、インフレ圧力が顕在化した。これを抑制するために、主要な国のほとんどで、採られた政策が、金融引き締めによる金利の上昇だった。
政策金利を引き上げると、当然、資金コストが上昇する。そうすると、企業や個人は借入を控えるようになり、資金需要が減る。資金の流動性が下がれば、人々の消費購買意欲も低くなり、需要と供給のバランスが変化して、物価にも下げ圧力となっていく。2023年後半からは、物価統計からは、その上昇に歯止めがかかり始めている状況になった。
このトレンドが続けば、2024年は、物価の上昇が緩やかになっていくことが強く期待される。この動きは「ディスインフレ」と呼ばれる。物価が下がる「デフレーション」とは異なることには注意が必要である。ディスインフレとは、インフレーションから抜け出した物価の上昇率が低下していく状況を言い、需要が減退、供給が過剰となった結果起きるデフレーションとは異なる。
需要が供給を下回ると物価は下がっていく。すると、現在のようにディスインフレが傾向としてはっきりしてくる。物価上昇圧力が主要中央銀行の目標である年2.0％に近付いていくと、中央銀行は実質金利が高くなりすぎることを防ぐため、高い水準に引き上げた名目金利（政策金利）を下げることにより、景気へのブレーキを緩めることを判断する。
金融市場では、この動きを先読みして、昨年12月のFOMCを一つのきっかけとして、主要中央銀行が2024年半ばには、利下げを開始するとの観測を強めてきた。パウエル議長のハト派的な発言や、景気の失速懸念の増幅が重なり、市場は「より早くより急速」な利下げを織り込むようになり、3月FOMCでの利下げ開始も織り込んだ。昨年末の時点では、市場が織り込んだ米FRBによる利下げ幅は、計1.50％にまで拡大した。
物価は果たしてそこまで、順調に落ち着いていくがどうか？これは、市場にとっての大きな鍵になる。インフレがメインテーマだった2023年とは大きく異なり、「ディスインフレ」の流れは明確になるのか？が今年のメインテーマになろう。
